Q: What stage of kidney disease is a creatinine level of 1.59? At this level, is it important to see a kidney doctor?

A: This patient’s eGFR calculates to 33 cc/minute per 1.73 meter squared. This is Stage 3 Kidney disease.  In order to confidently diagnose chronic kidney disease, this should be retested in 3 months. If still present, further testing such as a urine protein test, and further testing as recommended by her doctor may be appropriate.  Referral to a nephrologist should be in the judgment of the primary care physician.
