I have been suffering from IgA nephropathy since four years. Can you please suggest daily diet & exercise plan? Is there any medication for this disease? What is immunotherapy? When should I go for dialysis or kidney replacement? Please send your views as soon as possible. Is they any cure for it in USA?

There is no cure for IgA nephropathy in the USA or anywhere in the world.  I suggest that you consult with a nephrologist in your country and ask for advice.  IgA nephropathy has many different symptoms and has many different … Continue reading

I have just been diagnosed with stage III kidney disease and I’m 53 years old. I do have an appointment to see my physician Monday but trying to get some info before then. My blood pressure is good. Just passed some kidney stones but nothing really painful. Symptoms…weird taste in mouth, back pain left side. Are there things you can do, eat or take that will prevent it from getting worse or at least slow it down? My guess is it can’t be fixed.

The goal of treatment of chronic kidney disease (CKD) is to slow down the deterioration in your kidney function.  This treatment is best prescribed by your physician.  I suggest you discuss this with your physician.  You should be aware of … Continue reading

I’m having an MRI with contrast this week. I have Medullary Sponge Kidney. Should I be having a blood test first? The appointment scheduling department asked if I had a kidney disease but when I told her what I had she had no idea what that was.

I am not aware that an Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) test with contrast should pose a problem for Medullary Sponge Kidney.  I do recommend that you discuss this with your nephrologist.  It may be important that you tell the imaging … Continue reading

Is it safe to take a Saffron supplement while I am on hemodialysis?

I am not aware of any studies that have examined the use of Saffron in a dialysis patient.  There is risk in any herbal supplement that you take that may interfere with other medications you are taking.  I advise against … Continue reading

My brother-in-law was employed for 23 years at an Atomic Energy Plant. He had a malignant tumor in his bladder at one time which was successfully removed. He is retired now and was suddenly diagnosed with Chronic Renal Failure. He has no real medical history of any of the precursors to the primary causal factors to renal failure. Are these two things related and if so how?

I do not know of any linkage between bladder cancer and chronic kidney disease (CKD) in relation to exposure to radioactivity.  There is a known risk of bladder cancer in workers who work and are exposed to ionizing radiation such … Continue reading

If I have one kidney (was removed at birth) and my cheating ex-boyfriend was just diagnosed with HSV 2. My doctor tells me the only thing I have to worry about is the symptoms which have been mild. But I think she forgot I only have the one kidney. Am I being over paranoid? Are there additional risk factors with this STD when only one kidney is present?

A herpes simplex type 2 (HSV-2) infection should not pose any complications for a single kidney.  The medication may have to be dosed based on your current level of kidney function.  I would ask your doctor about dosing any medication … Continue reading

I am on stage 5 Last week I had swollen ankles. and feet. My doctor said that I have dangerously low sodium. He would like me to increase my salt consumption. If I put my feet up, the swelling reduces. If I start walking, the swelling returns. I also have a red rash on my legs.

I am unable to make a specific diagnosis based on the information that you provide.  I suggest an examination by your primary care physician (PCP).  Kidney disease can cause this problem and may require dialysis to treat, but this needs … Continue reading

I am 22 years old, usually healthy, hispanic, female. I am slightly over weight and have had a C-section in 2013. For two years now, I have had recurring UTI’s about 6-8 last year and 6 this year so far. I have not gone to see a specialist, but I am becoming worried about this situation. I fear that this may have been to many UTI’S already and that I might have kidney damage. How likely is this? I have no symptoms of kidney damage, but I am still fearful. My mother and brother were born with an extra ureter section that would cause frequent UTI’S when she was in her 20s. They apparently did studies on me when I was an infant and supposedly I did not inherit that issue. What else could be going on?

Frequent urinary tract infections (UTI’s) can be the result of many different problems.  I suggest that you have an examination by a urologist to see if you have an abnormal anatomy that makes you more prone to UTI’s. For more … Continue reading

MY HUSBAND HAS STAGE 4 KIDNEY FAILURE. HE IS AT 20 PERCENT NOW FUNCTION. HIS EYES ARE BOTHERING HIM. CAN THAT CAUSE EYES TO BE BOTHERED?

I cannot make a specific diagnosis based on the information that you present.  There may be complications of dry eyes and other symptoms that occur with chronic kidney disease (CKD).  I suggest that he consult with his eye physician.

Dr. Spry, my 58 yr-old husband has ESRD and has been on dialysis for 3 years. A few months ago, he had 2 cardiac stents put in. Does this disqualify him from ever receiving a kidney donation? Thank you!

No.  Patients with cardiac stents may be considered for kidney transplantation if the heart disease has been adequately controlled with use of the heart stents.  Each transplant center determines who will and who will not be a candidate for kidney … Continue reading
