Is sodium bicarbonate effective in slowing CKD?

In patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) and who have a metabolic acidosis, as evidenced by a serum bicarbonate of less than 22 milliequivalents per liter (mEq/L), the administration of sodium bicarbonate to correct metabolic acidosis and keep the serum bicarbonate greater than 22 has been shown to slow the progression of CKD.
