My name is Maria and my little brother was born without kidneys. He receives kidney dialysis..he is now six years old.. he is now ready for transplantation of a kidney. My question is what happens after the transplantation?

It would be hoped that the kidney transplant would work normally and he should be fine.  I suggest that you could review our web site at:  https://www.kidney.org/atoz/atozTopic_Transplantation This web site contains information about kidney transplantation and answers many questions about … Continue reading

I have been on CAPD and doing very well for about 4 months. During this time I have had 3 incidents of cloudy urine – mainly in the morning drain (after ExtraNeal). Tests show no evidence of infection and no temperature and I feel perfectly OK. Some mention of triglycerides. Anything to worry about?

I suggest that you have a urinalysis performed on this first voided urine specimen and see if there is anything to be concerned about.  If this is normal, then I do not find any problems with how you are doing … Continue reading

Good morning Dr. Spry, I recently reviewed my recent blood work results and after researching that the different tests mean, I’m concerned that I may be showing signs of a kidney issue (note: My grandmother died of Leukemia). My GFR is 60, and my Albumin is 4.9. My ALK Phos is 127, and my Anion Gap is 18. My research indicates that this could mean a possible issue, especially since the GFR has been 60 for my previous 2 blood tests, as well. My ALT is 9, and my CRP is 1.2. My SPEP is 6.6 (noted-“Borderline decreased gamma globulin is seen, no abnormal bands observed”). Thanks very much for your help. If my doctor doesn’t contact me with any concerns, should I bring it to her attention?

I do suggest that you have a urine test for blood, protein and infection.  This may point to some kidney disease.  Otherwise, I am unable to make any diagnosis of kidney disease based on the information that you present.  I … Continue reading

I am now 52.I donated a kidney for my brother Feb 2014. I never really recovered fully . I still have pain in my groin area. They stated they moved/touched (?) nerve(?) to remove the kidney via c section. I am at 53 GFR now and creatinine 1.45. The kidney that they removed had cysts on it. Should I have the other checked for these? I still get tired a lot. I hit that “wall” and need a 1-3hr nap, to recover daily. Is there a specialist in Houston, Tx that deals with donors? Frustrated here as pcp and the local nephrologist say I seem okay BUT can’t explain why I feel the way I do. My life changed since I donated but NO REGRETS !

I am unable to make a specific diagnosis based on the information that you present.  If it is possible for you to consult with the transplant surgeon who did your original surgery, you may be able to ask to be … Continue reading

I have kidney stones in both kidneys. Have history of stones and stent placement one year ago which stayed in for 6 weeks. I was stone free but now I have them again. Seems from CT scan that stones are only in kidneys. Not traveling out. I have had severe pain on left side and saw ER doc and then urologist. Urologist told me as long as stones are only in the kidney they shouldn’t cause pain. I am in massive pain that comes and goes and I am nauseated and have been throwing up off and on for over a week now. Should I get a second opinion or just go with what the urologist says and wait it out? Thanks so much.

The question that you pose is a urological problem.  I am a nephrologist and do not have any expertise in the management of kidney stones in the kidney.  You may need to see a nephrologist and see what is causing … Continue reading

Hi, I am 32 years old, my eGFR observed value is 160.8. Do I have to take any medications for this?

Estimated glomerular filtration rates that are above the normal range do not require treatment.  No treatment is required.  I do suggest that you have urine testing as well for blood, protein and infection.

My 12 year old daugther is suffering from nephrocalcinosis. What is this kind of sickness? What should I do to help her to recover?

Nephrocalcinosis is a disease of kidney tubules that causes calcium to deposit in the tubules of the kidney.  This disease is commonly a congenital disease (she was born with this abnormality) but can also be caused by such things as … Continue reading

Dr. Spry..thanks for your expert opinion on various queries asked by patients, enthusiasts and professionals. Let me come back to my query. My transplant was on March 2014. My creatinine remains at 12 to 13 for last two years. My blood pressure oscillates between 140/65 and 150/70. I read this as high pulse pressure. I take amlodipine 7.5 mg and beta blocker 12.5 mg. Is there any way to reduce pulse pressure and maintain at 40 to 50?

The pulse pressure that you describe (which is the difference between your systolic or top number and the diastolic or bottom number) is generally a manifestation of heart rate and how elastic or compliant that your blood vessels may be. … Continue reading

91 year old mother has CKD and also has a pacemaker for A-fib. She is now delusional, incontinent, taking her clothes off wherever she is and is confused. Her primary doctor will not prescribe dementia meds because of kidney and heart problems. Why? She needs the help with dementia now.

Many medications used to treat dementia can cause significant problems for patients with chronic kidney disease.  These medications are used to slow the process of dementia but are not generally helpful in reversing dementia.  I suggest that you discuss your … Continue reading
