Dr.my husband is facing dialysis and he wants to do peritoneal dialysis. My husband had a small bowel resection, my question is can he choose this route of treatment or is ICH dialysis best for him?

After someone has had major bowel surgery, adhesions can form and make peritoneal dialysis difficult but not impossible. There is no way to tell in advance if this is the case.  If your husband wants to try peritoneal dialysis, then a surgeon can try to place the peritoneal catheter and see if it can be successfully placed. If this is unsuccessful or if dialysis is unsuccessful, then hemodialysis may be the only choice.  Hemodialysis can be done in a center (ICH) or hemodialysis can also be done at home (HHD).  Hence, your husband has several options to choose from.
