I have severe sleep apnea, along with high blood pressure and mental illness. Over the years I have done illegal drugs and prescription drugs like Abilify, Seroquel, Lisinopril, and the list goes on. I find myself in a bad position. My doctor did blood work and said my kidneys are at 75%. I have renal insufficiency and ordered a ultrasound. My question is, what should I stop doing? If I stop Lisinopril, my high blood pressure, if I stop my Abilify, the nightmare begins, and I’m an addict of amphetamines which keeps me sane my belief. So what do I stop taking or what should I start doing?

The best advice is to continue to consult with your physician about the medications that you are taking and monitor your kidney function.  Medications can be safely used in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD), but require constant monitoring by … Continue reading

Since eGFR appears to indicate a bodies ability to “filter” out harmful elements in blood – what are the best ways to “clean” the filter just like I would with my HVAC air conditioner filter or vacuum filter or my car’s air & oil filters, et al? In particular, does drinking a lot of water (or other liquid or process you might suggest) have the ability to improve or refresh the kidneys “filtering ” function?

The filters (glomeruli) do not require cleaning.  The body is very adept at maintaining the integrity of the glomeruli as long as other disease (hypertension, diabetes, atherosclerosis, and glomerulonephritis) does not cause damage.

I have end stage kidney disease. I am on my 2nd night at home doing CAPD treatments. Five years ago my colon was removed. My bowel movements have never come back to normal since then. I have had very loose bowel movements since having my colon removed but never felt like I had diarrhea or was going to the bathroom too much, Yesterday and today I just keep having this feeling of being full and my bowel movements have increased tremendously. I feel like my bowels have to move even when I don’t have to go . I also have a tremendous amount of gas which I have never had before. Is this normal and is it maybe the extra fluid left in my peritoneal cavity during the day pressing on these organs? Can I have different affects to this part of my body organs from the dialysis than someone who has a colon?

The fluid that is in your abdomen that is being used for peritoneal dialysis (CAPD) will give you a sensation of having pressure in your pelvic and anal area for a time.  This is relatively common symptom and will usually … Continue reading

I was diagnosed with 3rd stage CKD with eGFR of 44.48.49,49. My doctor thinks that my blood pressure medication of Ramipril (10 mg) may have contributed to kidney disease. He has reduced Ramipril to 5 mg and replaced it with 5 mg Amlodipine. As Ramipril is also used in the treatment of kidney disease, should my dosage have been reduced? I have been on Ramipril for more than 10 years.

I cannot offer treatment advice without performing a complete history and physical examination.  You are correct that Ramipril (Altace) is used to treat kidney disease, especially in patients who have protein in the urine.  I suggest that you discuss your … Continue reading

My father is suffering from IgA nephropathy for last two years. His present blood creatinine is 2.1mg/dl. Our doctor is only giving him MEGA-3 medicine and some medicine for blood pressure. His current B.P is 130/80. I want to ask that treatment is going in right way or not?

There is no specific treatment for IgA nephropathy.  Treatment of high blood pressure and in some cases the use of fish oil has been recommended.  Other treatments are used only if there is progressive loss of kidney function or large … Continue reading

I have been diagnosed with chronic kidney disease, stage 3, with a GFR of 58. I am a 72 y/o female. I had a kidney ultrasound which showed all was normal. My Doctor seems unconcerned. Should they be exploring further into the cause or is this just normal for my age? I really need expert advice on where to go from here.

I suggest that you also have urine testing for blood, protein and infection in the urine.  In some cases, if we are unable to make a specific diagnosis, a kidney biopsy may be necessary.  A kidney biopsy is only done … Continue reading

My mother has severe pain in right kidney. She went to the doctor for checkup. He asked to have an abdominal ultrasound so after ultrasound, the doctor said that there is 5mm area visualized at middle calyx of right kidney. Please tell me what does this mean and what we can do for it also? My mother is also suffering from hepatitis C, so please tell me.

I cannot interpret the ultrasound examination without examining your mother and seeing the images from the ultrasound.  The ultrasound should be interpreted by the physician who requested the test.  I suggest that you discuss this with the physician who is … Continue reading
