There are a number of reasons why someone may not be able to tolerate dialysis. The most common reason is severe heart disease that make dialysis very difficult to perform. In some cases, peritoneal dialysis can be considered for severe heart disease. Advanced liver disease is also a relative contraindication to dialysis treatment, but this must be decided on a case by case basis. Mental impairment where the patient is unable to actively consent to the dialysis procedure is another relative contraindication. There may be other reasons that have to be decided on a case by case basis.
