I’m a 64 yr old woman with a EGFR of 50.5 ml/min/1.73m^2. Creatinine 1.15mg/dL, Bun/Creatinine Ratio 20.9. Should I be concerned?

It is possible that you have early Stage 3 chronic kidney disease (CKD).  I suggest that you discuss your finding with your physician.  You should also have urine testing for blood, protein and infection to see if you have any … Continue reading

I have a double ureter in the left kidney. My mother had her left kidney removed when I was approximately 7yrs old. When I was 13 or 14 a doctor told us I had three kidneys also (same doctor). Now I believe mother only had two and the left one also had two ureters but the top ureter did not function properly.

It is certainly possible that you are correct.  These abnormalities are likely problems that you are born with and are known as “Congenital Abnormalities of the Kidney and Urinary Tract” also known as CAKUT.  These problems are usually addressed by … Continue reading

I had lithotripsy done on my left kidney May 17th. The doctor said it took an hour and a half. The kidney stone was 7mm and now is 4mm. I am experiencing hair loss, high blood pressure, retaining water especially my hands but i think I feel it in my feet also. My boobs are huge, weight gain and anxiety. I had anxiety before the procedure. None of the other problems existed. Could all of these problems I am having come from the surgery?

The question that you ask is a urological question.  I am a nephrologist and do not have any expertise in lithotripsy.  I have no experience in the long term effects of lithotripsy.  I suggest that you discuss your concerns with … Continue reading

Hello Dr. Spry, I have 1 year and 6 months of transplant. About 7 months ago, I was diagnosed with BK Virus by biopsy after creatine increase, which is now 3.5 and has been maintained at this point the last 4 months. My nephrologist has put me on Leflunomide as an antiviral and given me two cycles Ciproxin, changed the immunosuppression from Prograf to Cyclosporine and Cell Cept to Everolimus. I would like to know what is the prognosis of this infection that has affected my kidney function? Once the infection has passed, Do i recover my kidney function? What other drug exists for this virus? My initial viral load was 6.7 million. I am currently in 152 thousand. Does this virus disappear?or will it be present in my system? I am so worried about my kidney due to this infection.

Infection with the BK virus is a re-activation of a virus that is normally found in many people and causes damage to the transplanted kidney.  It is usually not possible to completely resolve the infection but only to keep it … Continue reading

What does it mean if your egfr level is higher than your gfr level?

I am not sure what measurements that you are referring to.  The estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) is a calculated value that is based on your serum creatinine.  The glomerular filtration rate (GFR) is a measurement that requires sophisticated testing … Continue reading
