My partner was prescribed Veltassa for high potassium levels. He experienced side effects of memory and mood disorder, sleepiness, motor function decrease. His nephrologist immediately took him off of the medication. How long and what can I expect as the medication leaves his system? Are these side effects permanent, can I do anything to help detox from this medicine? He was only on Veltassa for about 10 days.

I am not aware that these side effects have been seen in patients taking Veltassa. Veltassa is a binder that is taken orally and is not absorbed into the body but is eliminated into the stool. I am not sure … Continue reading

My past 3 microalbumin tests have been 102, 64 and most recently 73.9. Is this something to be concerned about? (test taken 12/4/2018, 12/18/18 and 3/4/19. Thank you so much for your input.

If the microalbumin test that you are referring to is a microalbumin to creatinine ratio measured in the urine, then the normal for this ratio is less than 30 micrograms per milligram of creatinine (mcg/mg). If this is any other … Continue reading

I have Stage 3 CKD with rapidly thinning skin on the backs of my hands. I now see prominent veins and I think the bones as well. Is this normal for Stage 3? What can be done about it? I’m frightened. My hands look like my 98-year-old mother’s and I’m 76.

Thinning on the skin and easy bruising is a common finding in patients with kidney disease. I usually see this with more advanced Stage 4 chronic kidney disease (CKD) when the estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) is less than 30 … Continue reading

I have Stage 3 CKD and I want to know if it is safe to use Certo mixed with grape juice as a treatment for knee pain?

Certo appears to be a form of pectin. I have no personal or professional experience with this compound but if this is pectin, then this should have no adverse effect on kidney disease. The grape juice has some potassium in … Continue reading

I’m a 58 year old female. Last year my creatinine level was .9 with an eGFR of 65. This year my creatinine is 1.0 and my eGFR is 57. Why did the eGFR drop so much when the creatinine didn’t seem to? Also is this something to be concerned about and does creatinine continue to increase with age?

These laboratory tests are within the normal for laboratory variation and these numbers are not statistically different from each other. The equation that is used to estimate the glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) does factor in age as related to the … Continue reading
